Apple Reportedly Plans to Release 31.6-inch 6K Mini LED Display

When outlining Apple's plans for 2019, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the company plans to release a 31.6-inch 6K screen, delivering "outstanding" image quality thanks to the screen's use of a "Mini LED-like" backlight technology.

This rumoured screen will offer a resolution of 6,144 x 3,072, delivering a pixel count that's around 2.27 times higher than 4K. With a 31.6-inch screen size, Apple will offer 217 pixels per inch (PPI), making it similar to the company's iMac 5K panels, which provide 218 PPI.

Mini LED technology is a successor to today's Full-Array Local Dimming Backlights, with ASUS showcasing their ProART PA32UCX 4K Mini LED screen at CES 2019, offering 1,000 dynamic lighting zones to provide higher than average levels of contrast and enhanced HDR capabilities. Apple is said to be working with LG on its 6K display, with expected availability in 2019.

Mini LED is expected to offer better HDR experiences than screens using conventional local-dimming techniques, but lack the downsides associated with OLED screens such as potential burn-in and image retention issues, both of which are bad for PC screens, which often showcase static images.

Apple discontinued their Thunderbolt display in 2016, with 3rd party companies taking up the slack in recent years with Thunderbolt-compatible offerings. Now, Apple appears to be ready to re-enter the display market, pushing the envelope both in terms of screen resolution and display panel tech.
