An HTC Vive 2.0 VR headset may be releasing later this year

New reports from HTC's suppliers suggest that there will be a new version of the HTC Vive VR headset that will be released within the next 6-8 months, sporting a slimmer and lighter design that will feature some upgraded components.

At this time these reports are unconfirmed but given the fact that the VR market is still in its infancy it is likely that this new model will be a simple revision rather than an entirely new product.

This mid-generation refresh for the HTC Vive will likely contain several ergonomic improvements and use the same display resolutions, refresh rates and field of view as existing HTV Vive headsets, as upgrades to these components will result in higher PC system requirements, limiting the headsets potential userbase.

One potential upgrade to the HTC Vive 2.0 could be the inclusion on HDR compatible displays, which would allow the headset to display images with enhanced colour accuracy but we doubt that HTC would want to segment the VR market further by releasing a completely different headset within the same year as the original HTC Vive's launch.

Right now we think that it is likely that if HTC were to release a new HTC Vive headset this year it would be a product revision rather than an entirely new product, sporting some ergonomic improvements and a possible weight reduction.

I'm looking forward to when we have HMD's that are decent quality like the Vive/Rift but for £299 instead of £500+.Quote
