AMD officially launches their Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card in China

AMD launches a new high-end RDNA 3 graphics card, but don’t expect to see it at retail

At ChinaJoy 2023 in Shanghai, China, AMD has revealed their Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) graphics card, a new RDNA 3 based graphics card that is based on AMD’s Navi 31 silicon, the same GPU core that powers their Radeon RX 7900 XT, and Radeon RX 7900 XTX.

While this GPU will only be available in China as an in-box product, AMD has confirmed that the GPU will be available globally to system integrators. In China, three of AMD’s board partners will be building Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics cards, Sapphire, PowerColor, and XFX.

AMD has listed their Radeon RX 7900 GRE with a price tag of $649, listing the GPU as a Radeon RX 6800 XT successor. The graphics card was placed against Nvidia’s RTX 4070 graphics card, showcasing higher performance levels in AMD’s benchmarks.

Hardware-wise, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE features 80 Compute Units 160 AI accelerators, and 5120 total stream processors. The GPU also features 16GB of GDDR6 memory over a 256-bit memory bug and 64MB of 2nd generation Infinity Cache. This is notably lower-end than AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT, which features 20GB of faster GDDR6 memory over a 320-bit memory bus, 84 compute units, 168 AI accelerators, and 5376 stream processors. The RX 7900 XT also features a higher TDP of 315 watts and higher core clock speeds.

At ChinaJoy, AMD has released benchmarks that show that their Radeon RX 7900 GRE is significantly slower than their RX 7900 XT, but faster than Nvidia’s RTX 4070 in the games they tested.

Since AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card will only be available as a standalone product in China, the graphics card will sadly have little to no impact on the GPU market in western markets. AMD has no current generation products competing with Nvidia’s RTX 4070 graphics card in the west, a factor that makes the release of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE incredibly disappointing for gamers who wanted to see a new Radeon based RTX 4070 competitor.

Currently, AMD has not revealed any plans to release graphics cards that will sit between their Radeon RX 7600 and their RX 7900 XT, leaving a huge performance and pricing gap that a Radeon RX 7700 or RX 7800 design could exploit.

Like the launch of AMD’s Ryzen 7500F processor, the Chinese exclusivity of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE as a standalone product is incredibly disappointing for PC gamers. Both of these products promise strong value for money, and AMD have released neither product in Europe, the US, or other Western markets.
