AKiTiO announces their low-cost Thunderbolt 3 external GPU dock

AKiTiO has announced their new, low-cost Thunderbolt 3 external GPU dock, which comes priced at just $299. This is much cheaper than a lot of competing devices like the ASUS XG" ($499), the Powercolor Devil Box ($379) and the Razer Core ($499), though the AKiTiO will not contain some additional functions like Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3connectionsons.

This device is 428mm long and 145mm wide, allowing this enclosure to house a full-length GPU and contains a 400W PSU which will allow this to power a GPU with a TDP of up to around 300W. Additional power can be used to charge connected devices via Thunderbolt 3 and the device contains a 120mm fan for additional cooling capability.

This device can be used with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs and supports any modern dual-slot GPU. When compared to this device's competitors the AKiTiO Node this device is a very simplistic device which can be used solely as an external GPU dock, explaining the device's low pricing.

Man the tax on Thunderbolt must be crazy. I wish I could design something like that, or the ring pull on a coke can, they just sit back on my fat ass collecting royalties lol.

Shame though. I mean this is really like a £60 case with a 150w or so PSU in it. It should never cost what it does, but that's tax on the Thunderbolt.Quote

Waiting for a manufacturer to release a barebones external GPU dock. So many nice SFX / TFX PSU options. Add in a quality fan and that would be one nice bit of hardware.Quote

$50 case + $30 PSU + $20 PCB = $300-$600
