Intel to hold a "forward-looking" Architecture Summit this December

Shortly before AMD's "Next Horizon" event, Intel confirmed that they would be holding an Architecture Summit on December 11th 2018, with Anandtech's Ian Cutress describing the event as "forward-looking", which means that the showcase will give us a glimpse of Intel's future architectures and product designs.

After AMD's revelatory "Next Horizon" event, Intel needs to show the world that they are still on top, or risk losing market share to their main x86 rival. This will likely give us our first glance at a post-Skylake CPU core design, though it is possible that Intel's FPGAs, AI chips and graphics technologies will also be covered at the event.

Given the event's focus on architectures, it is probable that Intel will not be discussing any products, at least directly, at the event, though it will set the stage for what Intel has in store for 2019 in beyond. It is also possible that Intel will release a few more details about their 10nm lithography node, though that is unlikely.

Architecturally, Intel's desktop processors have been standing still for over two years, with Kaby Lake, for the most part, acting as a higher clocked (and more overclockable) version of Skylake while Coffee Lake-S and Coffee Lake-R acted as higher clocked versions of Kaby Lake with additional CPU cores. With their next generation of processors, Intel needs to find a way to increase their per-core performance further, or risk losing one of their greatest performance advantages to AMD in the coming years.
