AMD Zen 8-Core CPU Rumored to launch in October with 95W TDP
An AMD 8-Core CPU based on the Zen CPU architecture is rumored to be launching in October 2016 with TDP of 95W. These new CPUs will be part of AMD's Summit Ridge range of CPUs and will use AMD's upcoming AM4 socket with DDR4 memory.
Like all other AMD Zen based CPUs this CPU will be designed and manufactured using the 14nm FinFET manufacturing process and will feature a 40% increase in Instructions Per Clock (IPC) when compared to current AMD offerings.
With a TDP or 95W and a 40% IPC improvement over AMD's latest Excavator CPUs, AMD's upcoming 8-core CPU is expected to deliver levels of performance and efficiency that have never been seen before from AMD on the desktop, hopefully allowing the company to properly compete with Intel in the x86 CPU market.
This 8 core CPU will have 8 physical CPU cores with SMT, meaning that this CPU will have a total of 16 threads, making this a very powerful CPU design when considering the IPC gains brought by the new Zen architecture.
Zen has been created from the beginning to have a modular design, allowing AMD to easily use their parts to create semi-custom CPU and APU designs using a group of standard components. This will allow AMD to more easily create custom designs like those in the PS4 and Xbox One as well as to be able to better suit the requirements of their hardware partners.
Zen CPUs can be made up of Zen Quad core units, meaning that AMD can combine these units, or modules, into larger and larger CPUs using a special AMD designed interconnect, allowing AMD to scale this design up to 8 cores for consumer grade parts and up to 32 cores for larger server grade parts.
AMD's Zen architecture will feature SMT, so for every 4 cores there will be 8 total threads, meaning that this rumored 8 core CPU will have a total of 16 threads, which rivals the Intel i7 5960X in terms of thread count.
One other thing to note is that Intel's 8 core, 16 thread i7 5960X is rated for 140w, though this chip is using Intel's older Haswell architecture and their 22nm processing node.
AMD's new Zen architecture is designed to be a significant leap in terms of both performance and efficiency, hopefully making AMD's CPU lineup competitive with Intel both in the consumer, datacenter and high performance computing markets.
Right now AMD say that their new Zen architecture will have a 40% increase in IPC compared to AMD's current Excavator CPU designs, making it a historical leap in performance for AMD.

A big improvement, for AMD, for sure. But with newer/refresh Intel chips launching at a similar time, the gap will still be significant and growing once again.Quote
40% IPC jump is impressive, but that will still only put it in 2500k territory per core.
