AMD's insane 64-core Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is now available in the UK

AMD has officially released its flagship Ryzen 3rd generation processor, offering PC builders an incredible 64 cores and 128 threads to power through any heavily multi-threaded workloads with ease. Better still, is the fact that these processors are available from day 1, making this a hard launch, not a paper one.

In the UK, AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is already available at two retailers, Overclockers UK and Scan UK, who have priced these processors ar £3,689 and £3699.98 respectively. These processors will be supported on AMD's TRX40 series motherboards, and support overclocking, just in case this processor's 128 threads didn't deliver enough performance to suit your needs at stock.

As it stands, Intel has no consumer-grade or workstation processor that competes with this. On X299 Intel has their 18-core i9-10980XE, and on specific LGA3647 motherboards, Intel has its overclockable 28-core Xeon W-3175X. Either way, Intel has nothing to compete with AMD's 64-core monster.

While 64 cores are too much for most workloads, AMD knows that it must push the envelope to force developers to create such heavily multi-threaded software. Even so, there are workloads that demand this level of CPU performance, and 4K transcoding is one of them. Below is a video from AMD which showcases the transcoding performance of its Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor with Red Digital Cinema, who are specialist in the world of 8K video capture and editing.

This processor won't be for most of our readers, but those want an irresponsible number of threads and a cray amount of multi-threaded CPU performance now has an option with AMD's 3990X. That said, most consumers will be more than happy with an eighth of this core count.
