AMD's 24-core Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has been spotted

AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has been spotted in the wild, offering users 24 cores alongside the company's Zen 2 architectural improvements and the efficiency of TSMC's 7nm manufacturing.

This leak came via TUM_APISAK, a renowned hardware leaker who spotted the processor on the Ashes of the Singularity benchmarking database. With this, we know the name of AMD's 24-core 3rd generation Threadripper processor; and from that, we can guess at the naming scheme of the remainder of AMD's Threadripper lineup.

If the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X offers 24 cores, we can guess that the 3970X will offer 32 cores, the 3980X can offer 48 cores, and the 3990X can offer a staggering 64 cores. At this time the pricing of AMD's upcoming 3rd generation Threadripper lineup is unknown. We do know that AMD will start releasing these processors in November, starting with their 24 core model.

Thanks to AMD's new multi-die Zen 2 architecture, 3rd Generation Threadripper processors are likely to lack most of the downsides of the company's existing Threadripper lineup. Memory channels will not be split across multiple CPU dies, and inter-core latencies will be reduced. Thanks to AMD's 7nm Zen 2 CPU chiplets, 3rd Generation Threadripper processors will also be able to achieve more performance with its power budget due to increases in power efficiency. Combine this with Zen 2's IPC boosts and AMD's onto a winner.

It's not confirmed, but AMD's naming scheme makes 64 cores seem likely.

If they were just doing 24 and 32 core models they would call it the 3970X and 3990X. The 3960X name makes other models seem likely.Quote

It will be interesting to see how fast AMD's 6 core chiplets can get. You'd think they would be at the very least, on par with the 3900x @ 4.6. Hopefully better!Quote
