AMD Ryzen 3 pricing leaks

Does AMD have a i3 killer on their hands?

AMD reveals Ryzen 3's release date and specifications

AMD Ryzen 3 pricing leaks

AMD's new Ryzen 3 CPUs will release worldwide on July 27th, delivering 4 cores and 4 threads with pricing that rivals Intel's i3 series.

When AMD announced these new CPUs they did not mention pricing, though that has not stopped pricing from leaking all over the internet. Sadly this pricing has not been confirmed at this time, though it certainly looks legitimate given the rest of AMD's Ryzen lineup.

The Ryzen 3 1300X is rumoured to cost around $129, with the lower end Ryzen 3 1200 costing $20 less at $109, offering prices that are very similar to Intel's low-mid end i3 lineup. This should give AMD a huge price/performance lead, given Ryzen 3's 4-core configuration, especially when overclocking is added into the mix, though Intel's i3 will likely still offer better single-threaded performance.

Below we have converted these US prices into UK Pounds and added VAT, though please note that these are approximate conversions. We can see that these new CPUs fit perfectly into AMD's Ryzen pricing structure, with £20 between each major model in the lineup. Pricing for the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 CPUs in this chart is from Overclockers UK.

Compare these prices and specifications to Intel's similarly priced i3 7100 (£109.99) and i3 7300 (£134.99), which are both dual cores (with Hyper Threading) and come with core clocks of 3.9GHz and 4.1GHz respectively. With two additional cores, AMD's Ryzen 3 CPUs will offer much better performance in multi-threaded workloads, though Intel will have the single-core performance advantage.

Intel also offers a higher-end i3 7350K CPU for around (£149.99), offering stock clock speeds of 4.2GHz and support for overclocking, though this CPU does fall into the same price bracket of AMD's Ryzen 5 1400.

AMD reveals Ryzen 3's release date and specifications

With AMD offering competitive core IPC (performance per clock) to Intel, the battle between Ryzen 3 and Intel Core i3 will be decided on whether buyers desire more per core performance or higher multi-threaded performance.

AMD's biggest advantage here is overclocking support on Ryzen 3, which certainly attract a lot of attention from those who want to maximise performance/$.

Great prices. Was hoping one would be like a flat £100 but hey it's close. TBH at 4ghz in most games they should perform quite well. I did note that some of the 5s had less cache than the bigger chips and this did impact gaming performance a little.. Still, I would rather have four real cores than two and a pretend pair.Quote

The pricing makes no sense by spending 20 more to get hyper-threading being the logical purchase at that price pointQuote
