AMD's Ryzen 2nd Generation processors have proven hugely successful for the company, providing PC enthusiasts with a huge performance enhancement over their predecessors despite their use of what is mostly the same processor design and architecture.

This feat was achieved thanks to AMD's use of GlobalFoundries 12nm manufacturing process and the company's Precision Boost 2.0 technology, which when combined with minor design tweaks allows Ryzen 2nd Generation processors to achieve higher maximum clock speeds and maintain higher clock speeds over larger core counts in threaded workloads.

AMD has confirmed that they have started sampling Threadripper second generation processors to manufacturers, delivering new TR4 series CPUs with all of the benefits of Ryzen 2nd Generation, making AMD's HEDT options even more appealing than before.

First generation Threadripper processors were said to use the top 5% of Ryzen/Summit Ridge CPU dies, allowing AMD's 1950X to achieve higher single-core clock speeds than all of AMD's desktop offerings, maxing out at 4.2GHz. If 2nd Generation Threadripper follows the same trend, the Threadripper 2950X could clock higher than AMD's Ryzen 7 2700X, creating an extremely impressive product offering from AMD.

Right now AMD's 2nd Generation Threadripper series processors are expected to release in the second half of 2018, likely sometime in early Q3, and support AMD's existing X399 TR4 motherboards.
