Before the official reveal of Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Scorpio console at E3 2017, the Xbox division has given us a brief look at their new Project Scorpio developer kit, which is already shipping to developers.

This new developer kit will come with some significant hardware upgrades over Xbox’s retail Xbox One Scorpio hardware and will come with double the VRAM capacity, 10% more GPU horsepower and a 1TB SSD storage drive for faster load times. These upgrades are designed to allow developers to get a game up and running on Xbox Hardware faster so that they can create a functional game first and then optimise it for retail/consumer hardware. If Project Scorpio’s developer kit runs at the same clock speeds as its retail counterpart the developer console will have a 6.6 TFLOP GPU, which is more than 50% more powerful than the PS4 pro.

Microsoft has also added several new functions to their console developer kits, including an upgrade to the console’s cooling system to allow developer kit “stacking” that will allow developers to save space and the addition of a second Gigabit nic to separate standard network and debug code within the system. The developer kit will also have the ability to run in Xbox One and Xbox One S modes for backwards compatibility testing.

Microsoft is currently expected to announce their retail Project Scorpio console at their E3 press event on Sunday, June 11th.
