Ashes of the Singularity has been updated to better support Ryzen CPUs

Ashes of the Singularity has been updated to better support AMD’s latest Ryzen series CPUs, offering some huge performance gains of between 17% and 31%.

Ryzen is the latest CPU architecture from AMD, offering a very different design that comes with some major changes when compared to any of their previous designs. With so many design changes it is understandable that older software will not know how to use Ryzen to its fullest potential, explaining why AMD’s relative gaming performance when compared to their Intel rivals.

Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is the first game to be updated with official Ryzen CPU support, offering some staggering performance gains in CPU-bound scenarios. In the benchmark results below (from PCPER) we can see that the performance gains are very noticeable, with a 17% or higher performance boost at 1080p.

In these results, we can also see that this new patch did not offer any CPU agnostic improvements, offering no real performance changes on Intel’s i7 6900K. This means that this patch was created specifically with Ryzen in mind, with all the engine changes in this update having no negatively impact on Intel’s CPU performance.

This is only the beginning and AMD will need to continue to push for developers to optimise their games for Ryzen, as while having an improved version Ashes of the Singularity is great, it alone won’t change the programming habits of game developers across the globe.

AMD has already stated that they will be working with Bethesda to implement Ryzen and Vega optimisations, but the company needs to make this effort with a wider range of studios if they want Ryzen to be a runaway success in the gaming market.

– Update

We have been in contact with AMD’s PR team, who have stated that they have already issued 300 developer kits with Ryzen hardware, with plans in place to deliver over 1000 Ryzen-based systems to developers in 2017.

This does alleviate our concerns regarding Ryzen specific CPU optimisations in AAA games moving forward, showing that AMD is certainly taking things seriously on the software front.

Hopefully, we will continue to see this increased developer interaction from AMD continue to bear fruit with strong AMD CPU and GPU performance, with developers like Creative Assembly already promising to review and optimise their game code to support AMD’s latest Ryzen CPU architecture.
