Samsung create a new contract chip manufacturing unit

Samsung has created a new contract chip manufacturing unit, which will allow Samsung to better deal with both chip production for Samsung itself and for 3rd parties like Nvidia and Qualcomm.

In the past year, Samsung’s foundry business was able to increase its revenue by 86% to $4.7 Billion, making the foundry business one of the largest growth areas within the company.

With Samsung being such a multi-faceted company, it is hard for 3rd parties to trust Samsung with their IP, facilitating the need for Samsung to add an additional abstraction layer by creating their own contract chip manufacturing unit that deals exclusively with third parties.

This change will allow companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia to work with Samsung with fewer concerns about the potential leaking of exclusive IP to competing divisions within Samsung. This should help Samsung expand its presence in the chip manufacturing sector and attract additional customers.
