Gigabyte is reportedly set to merge their GPU and motherboard divisions

A report from DigiTimes has stated that Gigabyte is planning to merge their Graphics Card and Motherboard divisions onto a single unit, with plans to better address the increasingly competitive PC hardware market.

This plan will see Eddie Lin, Gigabyte’s current sales and marketing associate Vice President of their Gaming Products business division. The executives of each individual division will be reshuffled under Lin’s leadership, though layoffs are expected as both divisions merge to become a single cohesive unit.

It has been reported that Gigabyte’s profits have been harmed in recent quarters, though recent product demand from cryptocurrency miners have helped shore up the company’s graphics division this quarter. Even so, this increased demand is only temporary, leading the company to be more cautious moving forward, leading to this merger.

While Gigabyte’s sales have been stable through 2015 and 2016, total shipments have dropped dramatically in the first half of this year. It is claimed that this drop in sales is due to lessening demand in China’s PC and Internet Cafe markets. Net Profits are also listed as being down 50.59% since last year, with first quarter motherboard sales of around 3.5 million units and 900,000 GPU sales.

This change should see Gigabyte take a more unified approach to their marketing and foster more interaction between their GPU and motherboard design teams, hopefully allowing them to see the bigger picture and allow their brand to grow moving forward.

Right now there is very little information available about this reported merger, through layoffs and resignations are expected sometime after October, with business returning to stability sometime in Q4.
