Samsung set to double their NAND memory output in China

China is currently the largest importer of NAND flash memory, thanks to their large manufacturing centres which create a wide range of products for different markets.

Samsung, the world’s largest supplier of Flash memory, has committed to doubling their NAND output within the region by 2020, hoping to ingratiate themselves with the state and their protectionist policies. This move will also reduce the risks which would be present if the company expanded their production further within South Korea, where Samsung is based.

To double their flash output within China, Samsung will be building a second line in their Xi’an fabrication facility, which is in the Shaanxi Provence. This new production line will increase the facility’s output to around 220,000 300mm wafers by 2020, requiring an investment of $7 billion from Samsung over the next few years. This new production line will make Samsung’s latest 3D NAND flash, which is used in today’s high-end SSDs, offering higher levels of capacity and performance than SSDs with conventional planar/2D NAND.

In recent year China has been investing heavily in its semiconductor business, making progress towards creating their NAND and Flash product domestically, though they still lag behind the industry’s existing giants like Samsung, Sandisk and SK Hynix.

With such high levels of investment from all major players, it appears as if the industry is well prepared for dealing with the NAND requirements of future markets, which is a welcome change given today’s high NAND and DRAM pricing. The level of investment seen today has left many analysts worried that the industry could be oversupplied within a few years, which is good news for consumers who want DRAM and NAND sell at more affordable prices.
