Crucial ships 128GB DDR4 2666MHz LRDIMM modules for $3999 per unit

Crucial memory has started shipping new 128GB 2666MHz DDR4 LRDIMM (Load Reduced DIMM) with module prices of $3999, offering insane levels of data density with a low operating voltage of 1.2V. 

Crucial has aimed these new DIMMs at servers that run RAM-dependant applications which rely more on storage density/capacity than pure memory performance. If these modules are used in an 8-channel AMD EPYC server the users would have a full Terabyte of RAM, which is more memory than is available on most consumer-oriented desktop SSDs. 

The only real downside of this ultra-dense memory, aside from its pricing, is its rather high CL22 timings, though this is a required sacrifice to make these high capacity DIMMs stable. Crucial’s new 128GB CT128G4ZFE426S memory DIMMs also come with ECC functionality, like most server-oriented memory and is comprised of 8Gb memory ICs from Micron, which are stacked 4-dies high into a single package using Through Silicon Vias (TSVs). A total of 36 of these memory packages are used.

While this memory does support both Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC servers, Crucial does state that these DIMMs are optimized for Intel’s Xeon Scalable platform, Skylake-SP. Purchasers should check with their server manufacturer to verify compatibility with these extremely large memory DIMMs.    

With the technology at work here it is unsurprising that these new 128GB memory DIMMs command such a high price, offering 16x more usable memory than standard 8GB desktop DDR4 DIMMs, which doesn’t even include the extra memory that is required to offer ECC functionality.
