Project Scorpio will support FreeSync/HDMI 2.1 VRR

Project Scorpio will support variable refresh rates with FreeSync/HDMI 2.1 VRR, allowing games to be played without a locked framerate without tearing, V-Sync judder and minimal slowdown.

Digital Foundry states that Scorpio will support FreeSync 2, supporting HDR and variable refresh rates at the same time. This will be HDMI’s upcoming “game mode” which will be supported as part of the HDMI 2.1 standard.

This feature will require future displays or existing PC FreeSync display (over HDMI) that supports LFC (Low Framerate compensation). At this time it is unknown when HDMI 2.1 displays with “Game Mode” will release to the public.

Variable refresh support is huge for a console, as a locked 30 or 60FPS game will be expected to run at those framerates in a worst case scenario, which means that most of the time that higher framerates are possible, which will allow those with variable refresh displays to play at higher framerates under most situations without any issues.

To put it simply this feature will be transformative for consoles, allowing games to not only be played at a locked 60 or 30FPS but at a variable framerate without any tearing or v-sync judder. This will allow games to not have their framerates limited and ensure that gamers experience the fastest response times, which is great news for console users.
