It will be “a long time” before we see an Oculus Rift Gen 2

When Oculus announced their “Summer of Rift” promotional period many assumed the worst, thinking that this was Oculus’ way of selling stock of their existing Rift headset before they officially revealed a Gen 2 VR HMD.

Oculus’ Head of Content, Jason Rubin, in a recent interview with CNET, has stated that it will be a long time and give those who purchase a headset today “years of enjoyment” and that the next few years will be “very Rift-focused and Rift-centric”. This means that Oculus is not planning to release a generation 2 VR headset any time soon.

On the topic of wireless VR, Rubin did say that it could come to the Rift as an optional add-on, though other VR technologies like eye-tracking will not be coming to an Oculus headset until a new iteration is released.

I want to be clear: we are dropping the price to get more people in Rifts because we expect the next years to be very Rift-focused and Rift-centric.

To answer your question about all these other technologies: People should not hold their breath and wait, it’s not coming in a minute.

The Oculus’ recent price drop is designed to bring the Rift and its touch controllers into the lives of more PC gamers, with hopes to attract more developers to VR who will, in turn, attract more gamers into the VR ecosystem.

After the summer of Rift a new Rift Touch bundle will be released which lacks an Xbox One pad and the Oculus remote, reducing the cost of the bundle while also delivering the Rift and Touch controls in a single box. This current sale is designed to sell all existing Rift headsets and allow all future bundles to include touch controls.
