Intel reveals their 8th Generation of core processors

Intel estimated that over 450 million mobile devices are being used that are 5 years old, with Intel’s aim being to offer as much as two times as much productivity/performance than these ageing PCs and up to 40% performance boost when compared to their Generation 7 counterparts. 

The 40% performance improvement comes when comparing Intel’s (2c/4th) i7 7500U to their new (4c/8th) 8550U in an office productivity and multitasking workload when using a 600p series SSD. 

 

  
  

This announcement is not for Intel’s upcoming 8th Generation desktop series CPUs, though Intel has revealed that they will be releasing this Fall. Today Intel has released their new U-series of Ultra-low-power mobile CPUs, which comes with higher core/thread counts than we have ever seen from Intel’s low-power Ultrabook series lineup. 

We can expect further announcements from Intel over the coming days/weeks, but for now, the company is focusing on their new mobile offerings. This makes sense given the fact it is “back to school” season.  

 

Intel’s aim with this new series is obviously to boost core performance, owing thanks to some recent design iterations and their latest production technology. This has allowed Intel to reach new efficiency heights and offer more cores on their 15W product lineup than ever before, while also delivering some impressive boost clock speeds. 

With their high-end i7-8650U, Intel will be offering boost clock speeds of up to 4.2GHz, though base clocks are understandably much lower given the low-TDP range of this product. This will allow Intel’s latest CPUs to boost to some extremely high frequencies when required, allowing for some ultra-fast system response times. 

  
  

One of the other major changes is that Intel now calls their integrated graphics UHD (Ultra HD) graphics, to signify their support for 4K content like 4K Netflix and 4K Blu-ray playback using the correct software. 

Intel’s new 8th Generation U-series processors will be the first to hit the market, with 8th generation desktop offerings releasing later. Devices powered by these new U-series products will start to release from OEMs in September, with more products releasing in Fall 2017 and beyond.
