Crucial Ballistix DDR3Up until recently reaching DDR3-2000 on a DDR3 memory kit was considered the holy grail of overclocking. Many DDR3 kits tested at Overclock3D - even those with stock speeds of around DDR3-1866 - just couldn't cut the mustard and make it to that 2ghz sweet spot. Of course, with the way that DDR3 memory speeds have been ramping up on an exponential scale over the past year and many motherboard manufacturers keen to stretch the latest NVIDIA and Intel chipsets as far as possible, significant pressure has been applied to memory manufacturers to churn out extremely high performance kits.
 
Crucial are one of these companies who have stepped up to the plate and as reported in a press release back in March, have released some extremely tasty DDR3-2000 modules in 1GB and 2GB formats. Today we've been given the opportunity to put one of these kits through its paces, but first let's take a look at the specifications and what Crucial have to say about the Ballistix range on their website:
 
What is Ballistix memory?

The Ballistix line is specifically built for performance enthusiasts who want to push the performance envelope without worrying about data loss or corruption, mysterious intermittent errors and display problems, or worse — the dreaded BSOD! The Ballistix line of high-performance memory modules features advanced speed grades, low latencies, and integrated aluminum heat spreaders.

What is a Ballistix DDR3 240-pin DIMM?

Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs are found in DDR3 memory. DDR3 — the next generation of memory — boasts an improved architecture allowing very fast data transmission. Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs are available in DDR3 PC3-12800 SDRAM (DDR3-1600).

A Ballistix dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components attached to a black printed circuit board. Gold pins, found on the bottom of the DIMM, provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

To use DDR3, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a chipset that supports DDR3 — which is a different technology than that of than its predecessors, DDR2 and DDR. DDR3 incorporates different sockets; they are not interchangeable or backward-compatible. The number of black components on a Ballistix 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. These 240-pin DDR3 DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins, and each technology has the notch in a slightly different location on the module. 
 
Crucial DDR3-2000 Specs
As previously mentioned in our review of the Ballistix PC3-12800 kit, the Crucial website really doesn't do much to sell the modules to overclockers and enthusiasts. Important features such as guarantee duration and whether the modules are warranted past their stock voltage of 1.9v is either extremely hard to find or totally omitted. Also missing from the specifications page is the fact that that this particular kit features NVIDIA's EPP profiles and has been tested specifically to work with the 790i chipset.
 
The stock 9-9-9-28 latency of the PC3-16000 kit does sound quite high compared to some of the slightly lower speed CAS8 kits available on the market at the moment. However, as we've seen in the past the large increases in memory speed that DDR3 provides can negate any shortfall from higher timings. Also, by taking the more conservative approach, Crucial will have hopefully upheld their reputation for rock solid stability and full compatibility right out of the box.
 
One thing that Crucial seem to make a concious effort to hide is the IC's used on the modules. Most memory assemblers tend to show off this information with pride - knowing that overclockers will be looking for that all-important "D9" stamp. However, as you will be able to see over the next page, the normal memory markings have been stamped over with a "Ballistix" logo, hiding the highly acclaimed D9GTS stamp beneath.

I get the whole argument about timings vs mhz but what is odd is that in the Everest Memory Latency tests with 9-9-9-28, the overclocked settings lost by quite a bit even with the same timings. That overclock seemed to bugger them up quite a bit.

Only lil bit of uniformity seemed to be when the 2144mhz at 9-9-9-28 and the 1902mhz at 7-7-7-28 won out in superpi and 3dmark... But even then it reversed to the other two settings in UT.

Man... The argument runs on.

What bites me atm is 4x1g of this is looking at 600 with some possible playing around with volt/timings to accomodate a non set.

They do a 2x2g set for ~220 or so - now if ur buying components for a new system:

Q6600 + 4x1g (16000 as reviewed) = approx 730/740 ?

QX9650 + 2x2g (pfft who cares) = approx 770/780 ? plus u have a load of flexibility.

(figures are up in the air, but there`s a point to be had)

Tell me about it :s For a lot of it you can put it down to certain benches liking the higher OC of the CPU or the lower memory timings, but the DDR3-2144 results are just wierd and something that ASUS are actually trying to reproduce at the moment.
