Asus 9800 GX2 1GB (EN9800GX2)

Overclocking

Overclocking

Overclocking was performed using Nvidia's drivers and the nTune plugin. No hard or soft mods were performed on the cards and overclocking in this way is meant to represent an "easy overclock", giving value for money on each card without making too much effort.

Overclock

The 9800 GX2 overclocked very well with a speed of 745MHz on the core clock and 1052MHz gained on the memory.

3dmark06 overclocked

The overclock on the 9800 GX2 didn't seem to improve the 3DMark score very much which is a little strange, but it does show that the 9800 GX2 has a decent amount of headroom for Nvidia's partners to work with.

Good performance for a single card, but way 2 expensive atm. Great review as always Kempez.

The demonstrably cheaper link does work for me on the last page.

Super effort as always Kemp. Although I would have liked to have seen an 3870 X2 included as a comparison instead of the 3850.

Thanks mate, fixed

PV - so would I, check the test page for why it wasn't

Good review, it did keep up with the Tri-SLI in some cases.. But it is very expensive.

Ah yes my bad. I did look at all the pic pages and then skipped to the benchmarks. Tis a pity the X2 didn't behave

Unfortunately, playing with High settings just wasn't playable at all, with a lot of very visible lag.

Should be "very high" as far as i can see

Card is looking good. Hopefully nvidia can get some better drivers out soon!

Mr. Smith
Decent review. The gx2 handles most things well, not sure if i am sold though... They can be had for 350.

Oh, page 7 looks like you missed out 'Very' in the second sentance

The 9800 GX2 played Crysis very well with High settings at 1920 x 1200, with acceptable framerate. Unfortunately, playing with [insert Very here] High settings just wasn't playable at all, with a lot of very visible lag.

Beaten by Hatman lol

Very possibly

mmmmm skulltrail + quad sli

Not really something anyone should seriously consider buying, but all to their own. Can see some records being broken with that.

24-03-2008, 08:58:08

Mr. Smith
I've seen quad sli results, the synthetics don't benefit much but gaming scales well.

Crysis playable maxed out!

Great review as always. Now just let the prices settle, and wait for some updated drivers.

Pity it blows heat into the case.

A vapour chamber cooler would be very nice - much more efficient - don't know why these haven't been taken up en masse - saphire used one on a 3870.

24-03-2008, 15:53:10

FarFarAway
yes mate. I agree. I think they could have designed it a little better.

Looks fantastic, sounds pretty good and runs pretty well. Is this the car on Tox's next buy list?

Nice review Kemp!

Looks more like a Graphics Card to me mate

Anyway decent review, shame it's not really new tech... but still impressive for all that.

I actually had a dream about the gx2 last night! I was also doing a dice run but I overfilled the pot and it leaked out onto my mobo...

I'm on the verge of buying one of these gx2's - anyone know when the G100 or true next gen is due?

Well, my X2 is artifacting. Again.

I've contacted where I bought it from stating rather than replace this 3870X2 with a third X2, I'd rather have a refund or pay the diff (130ish) and get the gx2... Hopefully I'll have this sorted mid/end of this week!

Thats crappy. I changed my mind (yet again) and canceled my order of the GX2. I'm sticking with two pelt cooled 8800GTS for the moment as I remembered I'd ordered a load of memory sinks for them last week :s

I'd sli the new gtx's and oc the turd out of them IF i had a 790i as the price diff isn't much and they do oc well...

As I don't have a 790i the gx2 is the best i can get for now. This has been my only experience with ati and it hasn't been great. I'll give them a go again in the future but i'll be glad to return to a solid nvidia card!

the gtx's are quite expensive. it has virtually the same performance as the gx2 but a bit more memory bandwidth. the gx2 give more bang for ur buck and besides quad sli rocks!!!!

Could say the same about the 9800GX2 as well! Just grab some beta drivers from Guru3D and you can see a noticeable boost in performance.

177.35s worked best for me.
