ASUS ROG Maximus VII Gene Review

Introduction and Technical Specifications

ASUS Maximus VII Gene Preview

Introduction

The sheer volume of models in the Maximus VII motherboard range appears to be unabated. We've had the awesome Hero, the excellent Ranger, the fully-featured Formula and today we're looking at the Maximus VII Gene.

The Gene's have regularly been models that go far beyond they diminutive size, bringing all of the ROG trimmings to people who prefer a mATX motherboard. Or perhaps those who want a system they can take to LAN gaming conventions without having to carry a tower the size of a small hippo with them.

So far the Maximus VII range has proven itself worthy of the ROG branding and many accolades, so does the Z97 Gene continue this excellent work?

Technical Specifications

Certainly if you're concerned that the Gene is a cut-down model you can dispel those notions. It might be on the smaller mATX form factor but ASUS have still stuffed it full of the Z97 accoutrements and ROG elements that make it so desirable. You're getting almost everything apart from the ability to run three graphics cards, and that's not something that many people do anyway.

I'm just disappointed that there is no word on the mPCIe Combo card that we find on the Formula and on the Z87 version. And I can't even find it stand-alone to buy.

I would need wifi...

Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers

Aside from the sound how much different is it from the vi gene? The z87 to z97 jump seems very small

Two 690's or two R9 295X2's.

M.2 implementation is rather shitty on those new ASUS.

It's x2 PCI express 2.0 and no space for Μ.2 2280. Put it head to head with the latest e.g. AsRock on a M.2 fast ssd pc mark - and you too shall see...

Lovely board - apart from that ^ and lovely review.

Tom do ever MM the vcore on those? ASUS are generally running pretty close to cpuz indicated, so that's a plus on the o/c side of the board...

Seriously loving this board! Thinking of building a m-atx rig as I haven't got the space for a mid tower let alone a full tower monster..
