The Wiinja

With console hackers always trying to find ways to manipulate the latest and greatest consoles, a modchip for the Nintendo Wii is anything but a surprise. This modchip, named the Wiinja, is said to allow the Wii to play backups of game disks, and there is no word on it enabling any other functionality, so we may have to wait for later revisions.

The Wiinja works but disabling the copy protection that is in the Wii; however, the Wiinja will only allow you to play backups of games in from the same region in which your wii is programmed for, so not capability to play Japanese games if your are from the USA, and vice-versa. In order to install the modchip, you must solder 5 connections from the chip onto the mainboard of the Wii, much like previous modchips.

To prove that this modchip is not a hoax, the creators have posted two videos up on YouTube to show that the Wiinja is, in fact, real. This all came about after the process to backup Wii disks was revealed. Obviously applying this modchip, which involves not only opening your Wii, but soldering leads to the mainboard, voids your warranty completely.

So what do you think? Is this just a hoax with a clever name, or is it a new innovation that will bring other like it? Tell us in the forums...
