Ever wanted to get into the world of EverQuest 2 but didn't feel like shelling out for the monthly fee? Well soon you may get your chance. Sony Online Entertainment has announced a new version, EverQuest 2 Extended, utilizing the ever-popular free-to-play (F2P) business model.
"As the digital entertainment market evolves, SOE is focused on continued innovation in content delivery that best fit the needs of the growing consumer base," said Sony Online Entertainment President, John Smedley. "Our goal with Extended is to offer players an alternative to our current subscription program that gives them the option to choose a program that best fits their play style."
Like most games using the F2P model, EQ2 Extended provides a core feature set and gives users the option to pay for premium content. The core content includes full access to the Shadow Odyssey campaign (consisting of the base game, five expansions, and three adventure packs), four of the 19 races, eight of the 24 classes, as well as limited character/bag slots and spells. Among the purchasable content are increased race/class availability, more character/bag slots, and increased equipment/spell tiers. Current subscription players will have no fear of losing their place in their world as the Extended version will be on a separate server running parallel to the current.
"The very nature of an MMO is change, and the decision to create Extended was fueled by evolution of the industry landscape,” said EverQuest II Producer, David Georgeson. “By offering two services side by side we have given the power to our players to determine the program that best fits their game play style."
EverQuest 2 Extended is currently set to enter beta testing on August 17th. For more information, check out the official FAQ page here.
