Seagate Pulls out perpendicular recording in 3.5" form Page: 1
Seagate has recently announced the immediate release of their new Cheetah 15.5k line. These SCSI hard drives are their first 3.5" drives featuring perpendicular recording technology.
Perpendicular recording involves storing data perpendicularly (as you can already guess) rather than flat on the platter. This allows data to packed more densely, giving more storage space and faster access speed. Seagate first released this technology in their Momentus line of laptop hard drives.
These drives give up to 30% performance increase and double the storage size over their previous 15.4k line. These will come in 300GB, 147GB, and 73GB model varieties. Press Release
