Samsung announced its first 1.8-inch drive with a 60GB capacity as a part of the company's new line of N-series of HDDs.

Measuring 5-millimeters tall and with a super-slim form factor, Samsung's N-series will come in 20-, 30-, 40-, and 60 GB capacities and are available in both internal and external HDD types.

Although the company claims its 60 GB version is the world's first 1.8-inch drive, Seagate was actually first to the punch earlier this month when the company announced it was shipping its new Lyrion hard drive-also a 60 GB, 1.8-inch hard drive. Like Samsung's new drive, the Lyrion is 5-millimeters thick and comes in an alternate 30 GB size.

Samsung's new drives, like Seagate's, utilise perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), which allowed both companies to do away with the two disks normally required for a 1.8-inch drive to reach the 60 GB threshold. According to Samsung the new N-series drives will be ideal for use in small portable media centers and mobile devices.

"Samsung is offering cutting-edge technology from an aerial density standpoint with the new 1.8-inch N-series," said Albert Kim, national sales manager of storage systems for Samsung in a statement Thursday. "Given the same amount of hard drive space, Samsung is able to offer 60 GB per disk where our competitors can only offer 40 GB," Kim added

Samsung says the new N-series will come ready to support PATA ZIF as well as the new CE-ATA interface, which is designed specifically for hard drives used in consumer electronics. And we have heard speculation that the new 60 GB drive could be included in Sony's next PSP model, although this can neither be confirmed nor denied at this time.
