PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 In March Page: 1

Wii, PS3 & Xbox 360PS3 outsells Xbox 360 by about about 55,000 units in March

Michael Patcher, an analyst from Wedbush Morgan, has reported some bad news for Microsoft.  Their machine has again been left behind the Playstation 3 in the battle for sales.

Also reported was the fact that while the two giants battle it out for 2nd and 3rd places, the Nintendo Wii is happily carrying on wiping the floor with both of them.  It sold on its own about the same as both the PS3 and 360 put together.

Sales figures for march showed that the PS3 outsold the 360 by about 55,000 units.  The Playstation 3 sold around 365,000 units with the Xbox 360 selling 310,000 units.  The Wii punished them both with massive sales somewhere in the region of 700,000 consoles.

Patcher went on to note that with regard to the Wii, Nintendo might have been shipping a larger percentage of the 1.8 million monthly made Wii units to Europe due to the current weak state of the US Dollar.

“We believe that Nintendo has diverted a significant portion of its available supply to Europe since April, as the weakening dollar has made US sales less profitable for the company. However, we believe that European supply has caught up with demand, and think that the company likely shipped the US its 'fair share' in the month of March, particularly in light of Nintendo's need to support the launch of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.”

Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl was credited to be the best seller in March, with over 2 million units. In 2nd place, but miles behind, was Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 with 600,000 units.  Coming in 3rd for March was Electronic Arts title Army of Two shifting 300,000 units.

When the argument about sales of the consoles inevitably arises, most people quote old figures that could have changed dramatically since that time.  I myself was reading that the Xbox was comfortably still outselling the PS3 quite recently.  I took it with a pinch of salt as I thought I'd read somewhere things had changed.

Are you surprised by these new figures or is it what you expected?
