Earlier this year, Valve released their popular Steam gaming platform for Mac OSX. With this release, hope was instilled within Linux users that they would finally be gaining a stable native gaming platform. Users had discovered Linux binaries hidden in the Mac release and had even managed to get the application to launch to the login screen.
Unfortunately, it seems these hopes will remain nothing more for the moment. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Valve VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi issued a short but devastating comment:
Q: Final question, and one I'm sure you're not super-keen to answer, but I promised one of our tech guys I'd ask it. What truth is there to rumours that you're also working on a Linux version of Steam?
Doug Lombardi: There's no Linux version that we're working on right now.
That's not to say we won't ever see the application hit the Linux platform. Still, it's quite the disappointing revelation that it doesn't appear to be coming any time soon.
