Nintendo Plans to Release a Cheap Game Developer's Kit
Nintendo will release a cheap game developer's kit, known as WiiWare, in the beginning of '08. WiiWare will be a cheap solution to bring indie developed games to the Wii. Nintendo hopes to give gamers a larger library of games available for the the Wii, and games will be made available over the Wii Shop Channel for Wii owners to purchase.
"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.
Because games will be released electronically, developers will not need to worry about getting their game on store shelves or the cost heavy production. WiiWare is good news for Wii owners because everyone knows the more games the better. Developers will be able to use the motion sensitive WiiMote or the more standard controller style Classic Controller. The only problem I foresee is that owners may need to carry a large SD card if they plan to purchase a multitude of these games, because the Wii's built in 512mb of memory simply can't hold many games. We hope to see the success of the WiiWare program with the consumer in mind.
