MSI Details 790FX Board Page: 1
MSI recently gave out details for their 790FX-based motherboard, the K9A2 Platinum. Built to support future AM2+ Phenom and current AM2 processors, the 790FX chipset is AMD's answer to Intel's X38. The 790FX provides for 32 PCI-E lanes that can be spread over two x16 slots or four x8 slots.
In terms of expansion slots, the K9A2 Platinum features four PCI-E x16 slots, two PCI slots, and one PCI-E x1 slot. The board also sports a Realtek Gigabit Ethernet port, Realtek High-Definition audio, ten USB 2.0, two VIA 6308P Firewire and six SATA 3Gbps ports. These are still powered by ATI's older SB600 southbridge, which only supports a single IDE channel and four SATA2.0 ports. Thus, two of the Platinum's SATA ports are supported by a PCI Promise controller.
For cooling, the K9A2 Platinum sports MSI's CircuPipe heatpipe configuration, seen on their P35 and X38 boards. However, the orientation has been changed, supposedly yielding a 20% increase in cooling performance. The board also utilizes a five phase power configuration.
