Intel Announces First Configurable Atom-based Chips Page: 1

Intel today went to market with its first configurable Intel Atom-based processor – the E600C series. The E600C series debuts with six products, all of which feature an Intel E600 processor and allow customers to go to market with differentiated, custom-made designs. The six new processors include the Intel Atom E665CT, E645CT, E665C, E645C, E625CT and E625C processors.

“Our customers’ needs are continually evolving and they look to Intel to provide leading-edge products and technologies that will help them differentiate and compete in the markets they serve,” said Doug Davis, Intel vice president, general manager, Embedded and Communications Group, Intel Corporation. “Our new configurable Atom series helps to address these customer needs and provides greater flexibility with a simplified product choice, through one vendor.”

For the new series, Intel has combined its Tunnel Creek – E600 Atom processor with an Altera Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The combination provides original equipment manufacturers with the flexibility to cover a wide range of standard and custom I/O interfaces, high-speed connectivity, memory interfaces, and process acceleration in their products. This improves their time-to-market cycle and lets them handle design changes without too many hardware changes.

The single package is also great for board space savings and inventory control. Backed by Intel’s extended 7-year life-cycle manufacturing support, the entire E600C series has been clubbed with industrial and commercial temperature options so that it can easily be incorporated into devices such as industrial machines, medical equipment, communication devices, VoIP devices, and the like.

From the six processors announced, the first four processors, i.e. the E665CT, E645CT, E665C, and E645C chips will become available within 60 days, while the remaining two will only start shipping in the first quarter of 2011. Prices for all processors fall in the range of $61 to $106 in quantities of 1,000.
