How to install the AMD X2 Hotfix Patch Page: 1
Are you having issue's with gaming performance?
I realised there must have been something wrong when I installed a second 7900GTX to put in SLI and found that I was getting 60-80 FPS in Counter Strike Source. There was jerkyness and stuttering in-game.
This is a quick guide on how to get rid of these issues. It is not 100% guaranteed to work: but many people have found that it helped.
Please make sure you do a registry backup first.
This guide is not for those who are scared of messing with Windows. Back up your PC beforehand.
1. First things first
The first thing to do is to download and install the AMD Drivers from here. They are called "AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2"
While you are on that page download the "AMD Dual-Core Optimizer" as you will need this later in the article.
2. Download the Hotfix
Download the AMD Hotfix from here. further information is here
Install the Hotfix.
3. Edit your registry
This is to enable the Hotfix
Go to Start>Run>Type regedit in the dialogue box then click "ok"
In the regitry navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager
You get here
Then go down to "Session Manager" and right-click. from the menu choose "New"
The Key is to be named "Throttle". Once this is created right click "Throttle" and select New>DWORD Value
In the value name type: PerfEnablePackageIdle
Then click "modify". in the Edit DWORD Value box, type 1 and check the this is Hexidecimal.
4. Check your boot command menu
This should have this feature in it: /usepmtimer
to check this go to Start>Control Panel>System
The go to the "Advanced Tab" and click "Settings" on "Startup and Recovery" and then "EDIT"
If this is not in there add it to the list.
5. Install the dual Core Optimiser
Remember that Optimiser that you downloaded earlier yes? Install it now.
You BOOT.ini should now look like the one above and you should be set to go!
There may be a few reboots in the gaps of the instructions - but go with the flow and reboot as asked.
Here's how to get rid of it.
* - Uninstall the Hotfix, go into ad/remove programs, click on show updates and remove update numbered KB896256
* - Reverse the registry entry (from your earlier registry backup)
* - Uninstall the AMD drivers.
* - Uninstall the AMD Dual Core Optimizer.
* - Done.
