Highpoint to release the first SATA 6Gb/s host controller in November 2009.
Founded way back in 1995 as a manufacturer of RAID controllers and drive electronics, you could say that Highpoint Inc. know their stuff. It’s not at all surprising then, that with their expertise in this market Highpoint are to release the first SATA 6Gb/s host adapter, supporting PCI Express 2.0.
The Rocket 600 series aims to be cost-effective, ensuring widespread popularity of the new SATA 6Gb/s interface. The cards are fully compliant with AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) standards and should work straight out of the box for users of most operating systems.
Should you need it, the cards offer full backward compatibility with SATA 300 and the original SATA150 and will work in a PCI-Express 1.0 slot. 6Gb/s SATA is backwards compatible with the earlier standards, as they all use the same cables and connectors to make transitioning to the new interface easy.
Highpoint’s Rocket 620 with 2 internal ports is set to release in the states within the next few days for $69.99, while the rocket 622 sporting 2 external ports should come in at $79.99.
The cards are currently unavailable in the UK but look out for them at Scan, their UK distributors within the next few weeks if you feel the need to be on the cutting edge of SATA performance. It’s great to see the new standard taking off so well, if only the drive manufacturers would catch up now with some 6Gb/s HDD’s with performance to match the interface!
