EA Working on Battlefield Play4Free Page: 1

Leading games creator Electronic Arts (EA) will soon be releasing a free version of their popular Battlefield Heroes. Dubbed Battlefield Play4Free, the new game will be based on their highly successful Battlefield 2 franchise, but without the involved cost of purchase.

The free to play online game will be a deep PC shooter that will blend together elements of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2. It will use the same engine as Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield Heroes while using maps from Battlefield 2 and weapons, classes and vehicles from Bad Company 2. So players will be able to use 16 vehicles including the Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, its nemesis the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the massive Russian T-90 main battle tank, and the hard to catch LSV light strike vehicle. Players progress through the game to learn new combat skills, and earn in-game currency to spend on a massive array of devastating weapons and equipment.

Unlike regular games, Battlefield Play4Free will be free to play as long as players do not wish to customize their characters or get specialized, higher class weapons. EA will be using a microtransactional model to generate the revenue required to support this game. So instead of financing it through retail game sales or advertising, revenues will come through the sale of in-game customization items and other chargeable aspects.

On the whole, Battlefield Play4Free will be a full-fledged military FPS game, though with a more modernistic feel. With its advanced graphics, polished production values, depth and realism, Battlefield Play4Free should take the genre to the next level and compete with top console titles. EA expects that it will give hardcore gamers the same kick that they otherwise get from purchasing and playing full version FPS and RPG games.

“We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for,” said James Salt, Senior Producer, Battlefield Play4Free. “Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium – but free – experience that rivals top console titles.”
