Apparently contract prices for DDR2 continue to slide in the second half of January 2007, DRAMeXchange believes the downward price pressure should grow stronger after February as demand from PC OEMs is showing signs of weakening.

Weak DDR2 demand has prompted memory module makers to reduce their inventory levels, and the dumping of stocks eventually weighed on prices. The downward DDR2 price trend also pressured on DDR pricing.

Since the current cost of a 1GB DDR2 DIMM exceeds the ideal DRAM cost per notebook by over 12%, DRAMeXchange notes that PC OEMs are still looking for further price reductions. The firm cited PC OEMs as saying that the ideal price for 512MB DDR2 would be below US$35 while the latest quote in the second half of January stays at US$48.50.

Will this have an effect on the current prices of DDR2 RAM for consumers? Ideally, it would be nice to see a reduction in current pricing.
