Apple is giving some of its MacBook customers extended warranties plus a free replacement for any failed hard disk drives. The offer is only applicable to those customers who got their MacBooks in 2006 and 2007 and had to face hard drive failures.
The move is a pleasant surprise for MacBook owners as the manufacturer is yet to accept that any of its notebooks have a serious hard drive issue; Apple continues to stick to its statement that there have not been any mass failures. The official version announcing the “Repair Extension Program” says, “Apple has determined that a very small percentage of hard drives that were used in MacBook systems, sold between approximately May 2006 and December 2007, may fail under certain conditions.”
Though late by nearly three years, users have welcomed this admission from Apple. The first discussions about hard drive failures in MacBooks had surfaced in early 2007 on Apple forums and on MacRumors. Under the Repair Extension Program, Apple will replace hard drives for those users who are getting the “Your drive is bleedin’ demised” flashing question mark when they boot their systems.
According to official reports, this question mark should show up on both black and white MacBooks with processor speeds of 1.83GHz, 2GHz, or 2.16GHz. The defective hard drives cover the full range from 60GB to 80GB, 100GB, 120GB and 160GB capacities. MacBook owners who have a defective hard drive are required to either take their machines to an authorized service provider or visit an Apple Store Genius for an appointment.
Apple will also be reimbursing those customers who have already paid for getting their hard drives replaced through Apple’s out-of-warranty service. The company will contact such customers directly; if not, they can get in touch with Apple tech-support. Apple is offering the extended warranty for a period of three years from the date of purchase of the bad MacBooks or until August 15 of 2010, whichever is longer.
