Overclock3D host UK leg of Virtual Overclocking Event
AMD were kind enough to ask us if we would like to hold the UK leg of their virtual overclocking event. Obviously we accepted and then had to choose 5 forum members that we thought would be able to overclock the systems to the absolute maximum. Each contestant was sent a large box like the one on the right, crammed full of hardware, just waiting to be overclocked. Inside the box was:
- AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE processor (3.0GHz with unlocked multiplier)
- ASUS M4A79 Deluxe (Socket AM3 motherboard)
- ASUS HD4870x2 2GB GDDR5
- 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ Reaper HPC PC2-9200 (1150MHz)
They were then challenged to get the highest score in Futuremark's popular 3DMark06 benchmark using only the hardware above. There is one drawback though, no extreme cooling allowed, only air cooling! It's going to be a very tough competition and the selected users will need to use every trick in the book to gain every point they can.
It will all be worth it though, as the winner will receive a very, very special prize. It's one of 100. It's an AMD Phenom II TWKR special edition CPU. Incase you've been living in a box for the last few weeks and don't know what I'm talking about, then the TWKR is a limited edition CPU handed out to overclockers around the world to show the true capabilities of the Phenom II technology and demonstrate what overclocking can achieve.
Each member's final result has to be in by the 15th of August, which is just over a week away! To give you an idea of just how close this competition will be, one member has a score of 22591, whilst another has a score of 22489, that's a tiny difference of 102! These points can be gained by just a few more MHz on the CPU or a slightly higher overclock on the GPU, but most of the systems are already at their limits!
