AMD Turns Up Heat with ATI FirePro V8750
AMD today turned on the heat on competitor NVIDIA with the launch of its new flagship card – the ATI FirePro V8750. According to the official release notes from AMD, the ultra high-end professional 3D graphics card has been designed specifically for professionals in the CAD, Digital Content Creation (DCC), and oil and gas verticals.
The V8750 card boasts of the same 800 visual effect shader units that are part of AMD’s high-end Radeon HD cards. However, this top-of-the-line graphics card beats the Radeon cards in absolute processing power thanks to its massive 2GB of GDDR5 graphics memory. This gives the card the ability to handle up to 115.2GB of data per second.
If we compare it to NVIDIA’s present cards, the FirePro V8750 beats the Quadro FX 4800 all ends up in terms of speed. While it consumes nearly 30 percent higher bandwidth, the V8750 also processes high-end 3D modelling and other graphics anywhere from 58 to 118 percent faster. This makes the card ideal for tasks that call for extremely high amounts of fast memory.
AMD has also added multi-card support to the FirePro V8750 through the inclusion of its proprietary CrossFire Pro technology. The technology allows professionals to combine two discrete graphics cards and thereby boost the performance of their applications. According to the official release, AMD also plans to introduce the same technology on its FirePro V5700, FirePro V7750 and FirePro V8700 cards.
Additional features of the card include dual DisplayPorts, one dual-link DVI port and a stereo link for 3D graphics. AMD has introduced the card only for Windows XP at the moment, but it claims to have plans to expand support to other operating systems before the year is out. The card has already reached retailers and carries a price tag of $1,799.
