AMD Launches the World’s First APU for Embedded Systems Page: 1

AMD has extended its APU series to cover embedded systems through the lower power Embedded G-Series platform. The new chips bring x86 core with integrated GPU and DirectX 11 support for the embedded market.

The new release from AMD makes it the first chip manufacturer to come forth with an Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) for embedded systems. Featuring AMD’s Fusion technology, the G-series chips come with the low-power x86 CPU that is based on the “Bobcat” core. Some of the specifications of the new series include 1 or 2 x86 CPU cores with 1MB L2 cache, 64-bit Floating Point Unit and core clock speeds of up to 1.6GHz.

The chips are low power profile ones of 9W and 18W TDP respectively and come equipped with 3rd generation unified video decoder. AMD has also packed in a number of power management features into the APUs including C6 and power gating. Memory support for the chips is in the form of 64-bit channel and 2 DIMMs which can accommodate DDR3 800- 1066 memory modules.

With the release of the Embedded G-series platform, AMD has made a giant leap forward and presented the embedded systems with its most advanced computing processors till date. The G-Series APUs from AMD have already caught the fancy of numerous embedded systems’ manufacturers including Advansus, Compulab, Congatec, Fujitsu, Haier, iEi, Kontron, Mitec, Quixant, Sintrones, Starnet, WebDT, Wyse, and others, and each of these is planning to launch its own products based on the processors in the coming weeks.

Some of the applications where AMD’s G-Series Embedded APUs will make their presence felt are digital signages, internet-ready set top boxes, mobile and desktop thin clients, casino gaming machines, POS kiosks, and small form factor PCs.
