1.5TB Drive Issues: Seagate's Response
Two months ago, users began to report freezing issues
with Seagate's 7200.11 series 1.5TB hard drive. While these are not drive failures and no data is actually lost, I'm sure everyone here can imagine the frustration of having your system repeatedly lock up for 5-30 seconds at a time. Well Seagate has finally released an official response to this issue:
Seagate is investigating an issue where a small number of Barracuda 7200.11 (1.5TB SATA) hard drives randomly pause or hang for up to several seconds during certain write operations. This does not result in data loss nor does it impact the reliability of the drive but is an inconvenience to the user that we are working to resolve with an upgradeable firmware.
We are therefore asking customers if they feel they are experiencing this issue to give our technical support department a call with any questions.
Affected part number: 9JU138-300, 336 with firmware revisions SD15, SD17, or SD18.
While it's always nice to get responses to issues from manufacturers, it's rather disappointing that it took so long for Seagate to do so. Hopefully it won't take them this long to release the firmware update.
Do you think Seagate's response is adequate? Or have they really dropped the ball here?
