"The Eee Box gets a bit of a downgrade in favor of a price cut"

Eee Box Adjustments

Earlier this year, Asus released their small form factor, budget PC, dubbed the Eee Box.  Unfortunately, it did not sell quite as well as expected.  Thus, Asus has made some adjustments to its specs in hopes of increasing its appeal to consumers.

First off, Asus will be switching out the current Intel Atom processor for a previous generation Celeron 220.  The hard drive capacity will also be bumped up from 80GB to 120GB.

Now, it may seem like a bad idea to downgrade the processor.  However, this move allows them to cut the price by about 20%.  Currently, the Atom-based Eee Box sells for approximately $300.  The new Celeron/120GB variation will end up retailing for around $240, with an option to include a 19" LCD monitor for $110 more.

Will the price drop and hard drive upgrade be enough for consumers to overlook the processor downgrade and entice them to buy the system?

Just came across this

Figured that was pretty nice price, but then saw in for the same price on Amazon. Amazon also do exactly the same one but without the BR drive for about £45 less...

Has anyone else noticed quite a few good deals around regardless of the irrelevant 2.5% VAT cut?

Laptops have fallen in price hugely recently. Not so long ago I bought a refurb Sony lappy from ebay for about £400. Now there are brand new lappy's like that one which have much better specs for nearly the same price :(

I dunno, is it though?

I mean, other than the fact its in a nice small form of a laptop and made by sony (this has cons imo), the spec isnt really anything good, and the kind of level you'd find in a budget/low entry PC costing a fair bit less...

Of course, you get more for your money than you did last year, but thats the same across the board.

Even so, I still bought a similar spec Toshiba laptop with 120G HDD, dvd burner, intel gma etc, main difference being cpu having 1 core not 2, but then it cost £50 less( £314), nearly 2 years ago!

I'd ask why's he buying obsolete hardware? Actually, I'd probably reply with an elaborate I forked your mum joke.

We now have two models of the first laptop linked in the house. They are pretty tasty pieces of kit for the money. I'm not holding out too much hope on their longevity, but for that kind of price, you can't really complain if it breaks in a few years.

It is amazing how much laptop you can get for sub-£500 nowadays. Truth be told it's amazing what £350 can net you.
