Intel to unveil SSD with speed up to 240/170MB Intel SSD roadmap slide
Solid State Disks (SSD's) are an emerging tech that are rapidly gaining popularity for their reliability; read speed; low heat output and power consumption. However, one area where they fail to impress or surpass older technology is in their write speed.
Microprocessor giant Intel are currently working with IC manufacturer Micron to develop the worlds fastest NAND Flash Memory, and according to Intel's most recent roadmap, it looks as if they hope to implement the flash memory into three new SSD's. Intel's X Series SSD's boast a sustained read/write speed of 240/170 MB/s.
The X series will have two sizes, 2.5" and 1.8". X25-E is the top-of-the-line product, and E is of course stands for extreme. X25-M and X18-M focus on power saving, in active mode the power consumption keeps 0.25W.
The X25-E will be available in two sizes -  32GB and 64GB,  and will hit the market in the last quarter of 08. The 160GB X25-M will also arrive at the same time. The 80GB X25-M and X18-M will launch in the third quarter of this year. But the 160G X18-M will be the last to arrive with a release date set to Q1, 09. With the increased speed of the Intel X Series SSD's there will surely be a premium price attached to them. Expect to auction off your sister and perhaps an organ or two for the privilege.
