Windows Vista Box

Operating system giant Microsoft has announced that their latest operating systems, Windows Vista, will not only be available in retails stores but will also be sold online as a download to make it even easier for potential customers to purchase the new operating system. Offering their operating system as a download will be a first for Microsoft and may turn out quite well for the company, seeing as it is often time much easier to download something than run to the store and waste money in gas all at the same time. The newest Microsoft Office 2007 will also be available online as a download. This will all go down January 30, 2007 and these two bits of software will be sold via Windows Marketplace. Don't forget though, if you choose to download, you don't get the manuals, disks, or pretty box, although it is possible manuals will be downloadable and one would assume the disk is burnable, but they may have found a way around that too.

Microsoft also released information on the Windows Anytime Upgrade program which allows a Vista user to upgrade to a more premium version of Vista at anytime. So if you want more features than Home Basic offers, you may upgrade to Home Premium, or even Ultimate. All you have to do is click an icon in the start button menu and from their you purchase the upgrade. The manufacturer's suggested retail prices to upgrade to more premium editions of Windows Vista are as follows: Home Basic to Home Premium $79, Home Basic to Ultimate $199, Home Premium to Ultimate $159 and Business to Ultimate $139. This is obviously a way to get more money out of the costumer by making it ever more convenient to spend money. then again, it is more convenient if you are looking to upgrade, so why not.

Finally, Microsoft has announced a new Windows Vista Family Discount. This deal is in effect from January 30, 2007 until June 30, 2007, and offers North American customers the ability to purchase two Windows Vista Home Premiums for the discounted price of $49.99 each along with any purchase of Windows Vista Ultimate, which is actually quite a hefty savings.

"With the consumer launch of Windows Vista so close, we're excited to announce three new ways to make the purchase and upgrade experience easier than ever," said Brad Brooks, general manager of Windows Client Marketing at Microsoft. "These new programs give our customers more flexibility and choice to ensure they get the edition that's right for them."

These releases from Windows may be a great business step for them. I know that often times it is simply inconvenient to go out and buy anything at a store. It is also expensive and inconvenient to upgrade between versions. And of course, we all love saving some money with the family discount. The ability to directly download the operating system will help us nerds not have to ever leave our bat caves, which is a plus for everyone (you, the people that have to see you, your parents to be reminded of the sad fact that we've never left their house in 12 years). All jokes aside, this is a great idea by Microsoft because we all know in the end, convenience is the key to profit.
