Sony slashes PS3 price to $500

Just two days ahead of its E3 press briefing, Sony has brought the price of the Playstation 3 down from $600 to $500. An 80 GB model is also now slated for the U.S.

The new price is effective as of today, July 9. It's a move that now puts new attention on Sony for this week's E3 Media & Business Summit, which officially kicks off on Wednesday.

News began circulating last week that retailers had begun adding a new SKU (stock keeping unit) for the $500 unit, but Sony refused to comment on the prospect of an official price cut. Sony president Ryoji Chubachi even told Reuters in an interview, "At present, we have no plans," just a few days ago.

The new price is the same as the launch date price for the now defunct 20 GB PS3. The current model has a 60 GB hard drive. To fill the void set by the discontinued 20 GB console, Sony also announced that it is working on bringing an 80 GB model to the US. Already deployed in South Korea, the 80 GB model would bring Sony a bit closer in the HDD wars against Microsoft, which launched a new Xbox 360 with a 120 GB hard drive in April. The new PS3 will take over the 60 GB model's former price point of $600 when it goes on sale next month.

Less than eight months after its release, the PS3's price drop is one of the quickest in recent console generations.

Hi guys, i'm trying to fix someone's computer and the problem is this:

Power up the PC and it starts up like normal, the monitor once turned on does not show an image, the power light just flashes. I've tried 2 different monitors and it does the same thing.

The PC is a gateway 504GR and it has onboard video.

Any ideas as to what is wrong?

You aren't very clear. Does the PC post or not... ? If it does, Try pressing F8 to get to the safe mode menu and press Enable VGA mode.

Try clearing CMOS. Can you pop in a video card and try it out? I'm thinking that the videos outputs are bad on the mobo maybe.

I'm going to post my log file with the tech after this lol

Ya, be sure the onboard vga is on, and also check default output to pci/agp/pcie.

If after clearing and being sure they`re on, and u get no post, I`d say fried onboard vga. Clearing, flashing, setting to `default settings` and nothing.

U can check the socket for crap - but that`s very very rare. If there`s a bad solder point at the rear of the vga socket, u`ll notice abnormal movement when u`ve plugged in.

Does the monitor report "no signal" or just black ?

(on a sidenote, that was quite entertaining tbh)

Well, it does suck, but I understand the warranty arguement - if it`s a set policy, then that`s it. We tend to know these things about different manufs b4 we buy - and guess what, Gateway probably just lost a future customer cos as u pointed out in the conversation, the likes of Dell are that much more helpful imo, even tho I can`t blame this Colin for the policy he has to uphold - but weighing up the cost of replacing a mobo against a loss of a future customer (and those "upgrades" they immediately jumped into), it`d been worth it to me to have worked something out with u, anything down to u paying a part cost or whatever.

pfft so..

Does some1 with a big name make the mobo ?

Other than that, and if u do have a local/close store, I`d bust into the place and look for something u need to buy anyway - at the point of purchasing bring up the pc that`s fragged and try a face-to-face deal on repairing the sucker.

U idiot, he can`t get a screen to make changes with !!
