Modern Warfare 2 Confirmed & Dated

Last year, we reported that a second Modern Warfare game would be coming out later this year.  Well now it has been confirmed.  Infinity Ward officially announced yesterday at the GDC Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to the popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.  The release date has been set for November 10th.

Infinity Ward released a trailer on their site depicting through sound and fleeting images what appears to be a Russian terrorist incident.  Hidden throughout it are numerous Easter eggs that give more indications about the game itself, such as such as peeks at the in-game perks.  In order to find these, the trailer page gives users the ability to pause and zoom in on the displayed image.  Infinity Ward invites users to discuss what they spot on their Twitter here as well as their forums.

Perhaps one of the more interesting things you'll notice is that the trailer title spot has no mention of the Call of Duty name, indicating either that this is more of a spinoff from the original series due to the popularity of Call of Duty 4 or that the name is being dropped entirely.

Update:

In a statement to Gamespot, Infinity Ward has all but confirmed that the lack of the Call of Duty name indicates a new, spinoff Modern Warfare series.

"All I can tell you (officially) at this point is that Modern Warfare has taken on such a life of its own, it has become our focus now," a rep told GameSpot. "At this point, it's too early to release additional details." This was echoed in a statement by Infinity Ward CEO Vince Zampella, who said, "Everyone on the team is laser-focused on making the most gripping experience we've ever created."

In light of this, one may ask, what will happen to the Call of Duty series?  Will this "new" animal become Infinity Ward's main focus, with the Call of Duty series being left to Treyarch?

Check out the trailer here.

Are you looking forward to the return of the modern combat theme?
