AMD has released further details regarding their soon to be released R600 series of graphics cards. The cards are expected to be compatible with Microsoft's new DirectX 10 3D graphics rendering interface. Not only will they have increased graphical power but increased media/sound support are also to be expected.

The X2900XTX, the grand daddy of the R600 series with 1024Mb of GDDR4 memory and a 9.5" mainboard, is expected to be released March 30th, 2007. The X2900XT, second in line with only GDDR3 and reduced clock speeds, will be released some time in April along with the X2900XL. The X2900XTX also has a 12.4" (Yes, 12.4 inch) version, but that is recommended for OEM and system integration sale.

Pretty R600 Chart

The X2900XTX, in all of it's 1GB GDDR4 glory, will require a whopping 240 watts to run! This is not very helpful in the step of lower power efficiency, and we can only hope that all other products of this generation follow the Intel trend by vastly lowering the required power. We'll have to wait and see if these cards can live up to their reputation and redeem AMD from their current processing defeat.
