nVIDIA’s much awaited Fermi platform is all set to take off tonight with the triple release of the platform and the GeForce GTX 470 and GeForce GTX 480 cards. The exact time of arrival of the new cards is set for 15:00 hours Pacific Standard Time (PST) on 26 March, 2010.

The new cards from nVIDIA have been in the limelight for many days now, with many OEM partners already having announced the launch of their specially designed GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 cards. Fermi too has been making lots of waves, especially after it was delivered under armed guard to nVIDIA’s OEM partners at CeBIT 2010.

The Fermi-based GTX 480 card will be entering into direct competition with the ATI Radeon 5870 and in heavy testing under AA and Anisotropic settings, the card has delivered better results at super high resolutions compared to the ATI GPU. In certain cases, the performance has been 20 to 50 percent better than the Radeon 5870.

However, even at its highest settings and at extreme overclocking, the Fermi, GeForce GTX 480 cannot beat the performance of ATI’s dual-GPU, the Radeon 5970, which will continue to be the fastest graphics card on the market.

Of course, with the official release, enthusiasts will be falling all over themselves to get their hands on the new GPUs and there will also be many overclocking experiments carried out on both cards in the next couple of days. But availability is expected to remain scarce until 12 April, when nVIDIA will start shipping out the cards in bulk.
