June Battle Imminent

We reported a few days ago that Nvidia's next top-end chip line, the GTX 200 family, will be coming in June. Not wanting to fall behind, AMD has given word that their new chip line, the HD 4800 family, will be coming in June as well.
Unlike previously mentioned, the first cards will not bear the PRO/XT naming scheme, but rather continue the 50/70 scheme. The HD 4850 will come mid-June, bearing GDDR3 memory and a price tag of $229. The HD 4870 is to come later that month, with the same general specs, except that the memory will be GDDR5 instead. This memory upgrade comes with a hefty $120 price increase, leaving the 4870 with a price tag of $349. The final card, the dual-GPU 4870 X2, is set to come out in the fourth quarter of this year with a price range of $529-549.
Nvidia's GTX 200 (D10U) family will actually consist of 2 cards: the GTX 260 and GTX 280. Aside from the previously reported specs,the GTX 200 cards will feature a second generation Unified Shader architecture.

Yeah I agree. Valve gets to increase its penetration even further into the market and Linux/Mac users get some Source lovin' the easy way

Agreed, the main reason i cba to go to Linux is gaming. Whilst a lot of games can work, most don't.

Yeah I don't quite think it means that. It's probably just for the Source engine that was recently rumoured to be ported to Linux?

I think this could be a good step as native games are always better than using wine etc.
I only really use windows atm because of games (CS:S & GuildWars) & AutoCAD. When I played Quake2/Quake3 & UT/UT2k3/UT2k4 I was running linux 80% of the time, only booting into windows for AutoCAD
Yeah, neither of them run that well, but then i have an ATi card, and their linux support is suckie at best. New rig is going for nvidia.

The ATi drivers seem pretty good now. Especially compared to the old ones.
I remember a comparison between nvidia and ati on linux ages ago where nvidia were amazingly faster, but I also remember a comparison a few months ago where ati and nvidia were almost on-par with eachother.
Ati drivers are pretty fast, providing you get the latest ATi drivers and compile them properly with the kernel.
I've not had any problems with ATi linux drivers in the last 2years.
