Radeon HD 5900 - Dual GPU?

Two days ago, we reported of an upcoming Radeon HD 5900 series of graphics cards that made themselves apparent in the latest OpenCL drivers from ATI. It didn't give us any clues as to what they would be, however now it is rumoured that the 5900 series will be ATI's 'Hemlock' card, a dual GPU solution.

It is rumoured the card will be called the 5970, rather than 5870x2, following the two high end cards that carried the x2 name from previous generations. The second Radeon HD 5900 string is also rumoured to be for a 5950, or similar, which will feature dual 5850 GPUs, much like the 3850x2 and 4850x2 of old. This is an odd decision from ATI, possibly as the scaling isn't quite twice a single card, due to lower clocks due to higher TDPs, or maybe it is just a single GPU card afterall, similar to the 4890, introduced to compete with higher end offerings from Nvidia?

Either way, the card isn't expected for a few months at least, it probably won't be released until there is competition from Nvidia in the form of Fermi, which could still be some time.
