Intel Ready to Revamp Notebook and Desktop CPU Line

Intel is all set to update its notebook and desktop CPU lineups with a range of new releases in the coming months. Among the major updates will be a new notebook platform dubbed Huron River, which will be officially launched in the first quarter of 2011. The chip manufacturer will also be releasing several new desktop processors in the second half of 2010.
The new notebook processor will reportedly feature the 6-series Cougar Point chipset and a Sandy Bridge processor. While Cougar Point will feature a 6Gbps SATA, it will not have native support for USB 3.0. The Sandy Bridge processors on the other hand have reportedly been created on Intel’s 32-nm architecture and will come in both dual- and quad-core variants.
Graphics support on the processors will come through a new DirectX 10.1 supportive GPU that has been codenamed Ironlake. For wireless, Intel will be equipping Huron River with its Rainbow Peak and Taylor Peak wireless modules.
Talking about the upcoming desktop processors, the company’s first launch will be an entry-level Pentium E6700 CPU in the second quarter of 2010. This will be followed by two dual-core CPUs, also in the second quarter; two Core i7 CPUs in the second or third quarter, and finally another Core i7 chip in the third quarter.
Among these, the E6700 will be clocked at 3.2GHz and carry just about the same price tag as the present E6600 CPU. Intel will reportedly be reducing the prices of its E6600 series CPUs once it introduces the E6700. The two other dual-core CPUs will be the Core i3-550 and the Core i5-680, with core frequencies set at 3.2GHz and 3.6GHz respectively. Both chips will come with an integrated GPU, but the lower model will not support Turbo Boost technology.
The three Core i7 CPUs that Intel has in the pipeline are the Core i7-880 and the Core i7-970, which will be released first; and the 32-nm Westmere design-based Core i7-970 in a six-core variant, which will be released later.
